From Tom English
BBC Scotland in Japan
You did not have to have Jim Taggarts investigative powers to understand that Ben Toolis World Cup has felt to the big second-row as murder. It was all there in his large head that is angry and his face.
Toolis is one of five Scottish gamers who have yet to observe the activity in Japan of a minute – George Turner, Pete Horne, Blair Kinghorn and Henry Pyrgos being the others. All five will go into the fray if Scotland play Russia in Shizuoka on clearly and Wednesday Toolis believes that the opportunity is drunk.
If Im being honest, its been very frustrating, he said on Saturday in Kobe. For the past few years that the major goal is to get into a World Cup. You put in the work, you perform well, but theres a great deal of competition from the second-row. That is sport in the conclusion of the evening and boys will overlook.
I really dont believe my performance levels have dropped. I feel like I have played consistently well. I can be quite hard on myself when I know I have been doing. Where I havent been playing well, Ive had stages and you have to be truthful with yourself. This time I do not feel like Ive experienced a dip in form.
You have to be a fantastic team partner in the point and make sure everyone else has prepared nicely. It is hard, but you have to try and help the staff get an effect and that is what I have been trying to perform. Hopefully I shall get my opportunity on Wednesday.
Toolis came as third option second-row behind Grant Gilchrist and Jonny Gray but hes dropped a place in the pecking order after the elevation of Scott Cummings, whos appeared off the bench in both of Scotlands matches up to now.
This has been something of a surprise given that Toolis played at the Six Nations gone, starting from Italy and England – he and 80 minutes played in Twickenham – and – featured at three of those four warm-up games. Toolis started against France at Nice and played badly, along with everyone, but he bounced back and played in the win against Georgia in Tbilisi scoring a try into the bargain.
Cummings provides something different, although toolis is a difficult player. A dynamism with ball in your hands A little more footwork, a small carrying. The older man is on a mission, though.
Ive been playing well, Gregor (Townsend) only wanted something different off the seat. Grant and Jonny have been playing well. You simply take confidence that all the next rows are players. It is demanding, but that is life.
You do get comments from the coaches, but it has not been anything Ive done wrong. Theyve just been rewarding different boys. With everything I have been performing I havent been disappointed. Ive been doing the exact same. I feel as though I am at the top of my sport and I want to be sure Im not too hard on myself for something I havent done wrong
His views werent delivered in rant mode – Toolis is a individual that was quantified – but that there was no mistaking his irritation. Townsend now seems to have a fired-up player having a concentrate on revealing what hes made from. Thats no bad thing to the Russia match, Russia being a group of fired-up players with a steely focus on revealing what they are made from. They will not deny Scotland a winning bonus point but on current form theyre very likely to create the Scots function hard to get it.
Toolis continues to be pretty much a mainstay 23 for much of the past couple of decades and has 21 caps. He had been involved in two of those four November internationals and all three of those games in last years summer tour in USA, Canada and Argentina.
He said he has to remain positive although the demotion has rankled with him. I understand that things can change very quickly. You see boys and theyre outstanding, when they get back in the group. You would not be prepared to go straight back into there, if you are negative the time. You simply have to keep as positive as you can. Ill keep doing what I am doing.
Its something whichs a psychological skill. Get and you want to play professional rugby as you grow up. You believe a couple of years ago, if youd been in this place you would be entirely stoked, but since you get more and longer you want to have more and more
His luck will come at a Scotland facet due to be called on Monday. Toolis is very likely to start with the player that has usurped him Cummings, from the group from the second-row. Its possible that Townsend will make 14 changes for the Russia match with Darcy Graham seeming to be the only in the frame after beginning against Samoa, to move again.
Most frontliners even given a rest altogether, using an eye on the do-or-die match with Japan only four days after, or will be held in reserve.
You will need to have every opportunity and that is how its, said Toolis. You see all over the world – players perhaps have missed and come back in and have had a excellent game. You see these boys becoming man of the match awards and you will need to use that as gas
Toolis is not currently lacking in motivation, that is as simple as the frown on his head.
