Gary Neville: Manchester United evolution more important than Premier League finish

Gary Neville considers the growth of Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be more important than their Premier League finish this year.
It’s been an up and down start to the season for Man Utd, that started with a 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea pulls against Wolves and Southampton sandwiched a jolt home loss to Crystal Palace.
Nevertheless, they return to winning way past weekend, beating Leicester 1-0 at Old Trafford, also Sky Sports pundit Neville believes Man Utd are transferring down the path that was perfect.
“I believe that’s the one thing about this United team this year, there’s no doubt they all look like facing in the right way,” he said on Monday Night Football.
“A large debating stage between Manchester United fans at this moment in time is if what’s occurring today is lowering expectations in the meaning they’ve not gone huge in the transfer market concerning internet spend. There’s a sense that they’ve lost Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku and yet they’ve signed three players who are improving and young.
“There’s a feeling that they gone backward and just spent #60m to 70m internet. There’s the other midfielder because the midfield is feeble and a sense that they need to have bought another centre.
“I applaud what Manchester United’ve done this summer in a sense as they’ve made big mistakes. I have been critical of them paying on the best for ageing players, they have reacted to other teams looking like their registering players and panic purchased. They’ve got to prevent that, so there has to be a strategy and a plan – there hasn’t been for the previous seven years at the center.
“What it seems like today is that they’ve gone back to a plan of signing emerging British gamers, bringing academy players through and identifying global talent. At this moment at time, United’s average age has return to 24, you will find just eight academy players from the group, but there’s a sense among several Manchester United fans that expectations are being reduced and this isn’t good enough.
“I actually think United have taken a step backwards but a step in the perfect direction to go forwards because enough is enough of all these 30-year-old players arriving, maybe not suiting the design. They’ve got to prevent that because it’s not worked for the club.
“What I’m saying is they’ve changed direction. Whether you like it or that I like, it’s a reversal of direction. In Daniel James, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they have got gamers who have hopefully got a long time at Manchester United for the next 10 decades. The three of them have begun nicely.
“There’s a feeling that Manchester United have got young players are they good enough are they not? I consider the young players from the team against Leicester and there’s Wan-Bissaka, Perreira, McTominay, James and Rashford. I say are they good enough? At this moment in time, no. They’ve got to prove themselves. All of them look promising and they are functioning at their maximum in every match.
“Top four and winning a trophy would be a successful year. That is where Manchester United are at. That is unacceptable with respect to where United should be, but they are incapable – after seven or six years – of going from fifth, sixth or seventh in to first. They are nowhere near that in this moment in time.
“They are going to have to have three or four good transfer windows. The absolute most significant thing in the previous window n’t only added two or three players of the kind, it was making sure they didn’t create any further mistakes. I really don’t think they’ve done . I believe Man Utd this season will be stronger with Fellaini Herrera and Lukaku, however in the long term, they will not be because these players will never get Man Utd in the place where they will need to become.
“Of course, Man Utd have to win the Premier League title. That should not alter and needs to be the barometer, but you can not go from not liking the group with soccer to winning the league. There’s a measure in the center of getting better football, liking the group and them you can begin moving upward.
“There have been obvious examples. Everyone in the club might observe he was about the path, although jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, he achieved Champions League victory without a trophy after four years. Frank [Lampard] and Ole need to convince lovers and their board which they are on the right track.
“I think being on the right track this year is more significant than fifth, fourth or third. People must begin liking the group again.”
